Lukchup is a beloved traditional Thai dessert, renowned for its unique and attractive appearance. Lukchup offers endless opportunities for creativity, with a variety of forms, ranging from tropical fruits and vegetables to animals and cartoons. Meaning ‘loveliness’, these miniature fruits are suitable as gifts for children and adults. 

Lukchup is a traditional Thai dessert that has its origins in a Portuguese recipe, where almonds were used. In Thailand, mung beans replaced the almonds due to their unavailability. This delicacy was once only available to royalty and those in the palace, dating back to the Ayutthaya Era, in the 14th Century. But now, Lukchup can be found in many Thai dessert shops and markets.

Like most Thai desserts, it requires skill and love to make. Making them is a slow process, as each step in making Lukchup defines each character. Producing the product requires a delicate process of shaping the mung bean paste, adding food colouring, and coating the mixture with agar agar jelly 3-5 times. For these reasons, every piece is unique and meaningful.
