Luk Chup is the most recognisable traditional Thai dessert to many Thai people and foreigners, because of its attractive appeal. It is traditionally seen in a miniature version of tropical fruits. However, like most of other Thai desserts, it requires skill and love to make. It’s a slow process in making them. The meaning of ‘loveliness’ made these miniature fruits suitable as a gifts for children from adults in Thai culture. There are plenty of room for creativity in how to present them, it has become popular in younger Thai desserts makers exactly because they can be designed in so many forms, not only fruits but animals or cartoons.

They usually are not uniformly made as each step in the process defines each character . From hand-shaping the mung bean paste into desirable shapes, then painting with food colouring, and finally coating with agar agar jelly for 3-5 times. From these reasons, it makes every piece unique, and meaningful.

This is one of our Autumn limited edition treats, perfect for Halloween parties and parties that you are hosting in the Autumn time.

Luk Chup is a Thai dessert that is created from marzipan, this was originally a recipe from Portugal. In the Portuguese recipe they used almonds however there was an absence of almonds in Thailand so were replaced by mung beans.

In the olden days, Luk Chup was created only for kings, royal families and people in the palace. However, nowadays Luk Chup can be bought in general dessert shops in Thailand. The shape of Luk Chup is made into fruit or vegetables with the colours matching the foods that they represent.

As you can see since our Luk Chup is Autumn edition, we made it into the shape of pumpkins/ Jack O’Lanterns which is why we think they are perfect for the Halloween season.

One of the key ingredients of Luk Chup is the mung bean. The mung bean is native to India and has been cultivated in China and most of Asia. The mung bean possesses many health benefits. Mung beans contain enzymes, nutrients and antioxidants which are essential for maintaining good health. Mung beans are good for the health of the eyes, hair, nails and liver. Mung beans also enhance blood circulation and are loaded with a high amount of fibre and are low in calories. Mung beans are used in traditional Chinese medicine for therapeutic uses e.g., to detoxify the body and eliminate heat.
